AFL Cairns is launching AFL 9’s again in October 2014. The 9 week competition will be held on Wednesday Nights from the 15th of October and finish on Wednesday, 10th December 2014. We encourage individuals, family groups, businesses, football clubs, committees and friends to join up and create your “own” team.
AFL 9’s is the AFLs official modified match play version of the game. It has been developed to provide an opportunity for AFL enthusiasts and those new to the game, for the purpose of participating in a match play experience that has strong parallels with the traditional game. Importantly, AFL 9’s is easier to play, less physically demanding and provides an environment whereby participation, enjoyment and safety are a priority. The game enables people of all ages and ability levels to participate in male, female or mixed competitions. It truly is: ‘The Game for everyone’.
AFL 9’s is a more accessible version of Australian rules football that people can pick up and play with some degree of skill and ability and it is directly aligned to the traditional game of AFL. AFL 9’s competitions will focus on the encouragement of social participation rather than creating competitive natures.
This non-contact game is a social, fun and easy sport to play for people over the age of 15 and skill level which incorporates all the fundamentals of AFL football in a simple, modified version. AFL 9s is the perfect team sport to play as it is social, fun and it can be a great workout.

When: Wednesday Night
Where: Cazalys Stadium
Time: 6:00pm onwards (6:00pm/7:00pm/8:00pm timeslots)
Duration: October 15th to December 10th (nine week comp).
Participants must be 15 years and older to play, with the minimum amount of players per team is nine (9). Teams may have extra players for interchanges.
Registration costs will be $800.00 per team, so with 10 players per team, it’s $10 per game per person.
The traditional AFL rules have been modified to make the game safe, fast and exciting and there will be mixed, female and male competitions to suit people of all skill levels.
The major rules:
• 100m x 50m field is divided into 3 zones - 60m mid zone and two 20m scoring zones.
• 4 x 10min Quarters.
• 9-a-side (unlimited bench) – teams MUST have at least two females
• Teams score by kicking the football to one of three designated forwards in their scoring zone, only forwards can kick for goal after marking the ball in their scoring zone.
• If a turnover occurs the opposing team gains possession where the ball first made contact with the ground.
• The player with the ball is dispossessed when they have been tagged two handed by an opposition player.
• No tackling, bumping, sheparding.
