The AFL has thrown its support behind cairns bid to have an oncology unit at the city's hospital. The nation's peak football body will donate $1 to the COUCH organisation for every person who attends next Friday nights NAB Cup regional challenge match in Cairns.
And if as local officials hope and 10,000 people turn up to Cazalys, the AFL will donate up to $10,000 to the COUCH project. AFL Cairns acting general manager Gary Young said the support was sensational in what has been "Target 10,000".
"Its now up to the Cairns community to come along and support the game and the Target 10,000 initiative", Young said. "It would be great to see 10,000 here under lights on the night to cheer on some of the best AFL footballers in the country".
"This is our once a year chance to see premium AFL football action. It's great for our local footballers to watch and learn from as well as being a great spectacle for anyone who loves their sport.
"Cazalys under lights is fantastic. As a playing field it has been described as one of the best that professional sportsmen play on." The match will be played between either Richmond or St Kilda up against Geelong or Melbourne. Which of those teams will be coming to Cairns will be known by Saturday afternoon.
