Cairns has been chosen as the host city for the 2009 AFL Masters Carnival - a week long event in October which attracts teams from every State of Australia in five age-based team categories – 35 to 40, 40 to 45, 45 to 50, 50 to 55 and 55+. The 2008 event was held in Darwin and attracted
almost 1000 players in 38 teams.
The desirability of Cairns as a holiday destination almost ensures over forty teams will participate with an even larger contingent of family and friends accompanying the players due to Cairns being such a desirable destination.
The Carnival is held over eight days with fours days of competition culminating in Finals for each category. The games are played with slightly abridged rules to protect the ‘aging bodies’ of the players but played with great intensity and competitiveness. In 2008 the oldest player to participate was 73!
