The Piccones U16 Cairns Lions started their journey to the Queensland Country Championships with an impressive and confidence boosting performance against the Cairns Masters team at Watsonâs Oval on Wednesday evening.
This was the teams first hit out after beginning their training program in late January and the first chance for coaches to see the large squad under match conditions. 45 players were rotated through the U16 team ensuring fresh legs right to the games death.
After a tight start to the game the speed and fitness of the young legs came to the fore with a 5 goal to nil second quarter setting up the game. The young Lions team then took control, eventually running out 13 goal victors.
âWe still have things we need to improve on but it is early days.â âIt was pleasing to see the players trying to implement some of the things theyâve been working hard on training.â âIt was also pleasing to see them not get intimidated by the bigger more mature bodies of the Masters team.â
The Piccones U16 Cairns Lions will travel to Rockhampton in April to compete in the Queensland Country Championships. The Lions were runners up last year and will be keen to go one better in 2009.
