The Cairns Lions remain the standard setter of country football after winning their fifth straight AFL Queensland Under-14 Country Championships at Cazalys yesterday.
While pushed on occasion during their matches, the Lions withstood every challenge thrown their way before posting comfortable wins in all three games.
Lions coach Eddie Skiba said his side’s 6.4 (40) to 2.1 (13) victory over Townsville was the most taxing.
"Early on Townsville were pretty good," he said.
"When we go up a level there always seems to be a bit of an adjustment period and I think we were guilty of doing a bit too much too early.
"But by the end of the game we had adjusted to the pace but it was pretty tight for about three quarters."
The Lions’ dominance was rewarded at the selection table with seven players named in the Country Kookaburras side to contest the state championships on the Gold Coast later this month.
