Everytime Gareth Hose checks the weather forecast for western Victoria this time of year he remembers one of the reasons why he moved about 2700km closer to the equator.
The Saints midfielder arrived in Cairns three seasons ago to link with coach and former Redan teammate Mark Kennedy and has since established himself as one of the AFL Cairns’ elite players.
The boy from the tiny Mallee town of Beulah, northwest of Melbourne, said life in the Far North was agreeing with him.
"I’m loving it up here playing in 25 degree temperatures during winter," he said.
"I don’t seem to get as many injuries up here. It must be something about playing in the warm weather."
A heat of a different kind will be on Hose and the Saints tomorrow when they travel to Crathern Oval for a match against Centrals Trinity Beach.
The Bulldogs are arguably the form side of the competition, earning the tag by mauling the previously unbeaten and un-chewed South Cairns in their last match two weeks ago.
Saints defeated the Bulldogs by 29 points in their first encounter of the season in early May but Hose said that result would count for little tomorrow.
