The Manunda Hawks scored undoubtedly their most satisfying win of the season on Saturday, toppling reigning AFL Cairns premiers Cairns Saints in a nine-point thriller at Griffiths Park.
It was left to Hawks player coach Gabby Weetra to seal the win. The intimidating forward moved his side more than a kick clear with a goal just before fulltime.
The clenched fist Weetra raised after splitting the sticks said it all.
Watching it unfold from the outer, Hawks president Lew Collier praised the character of his team.
"It was one of the best wins for our club for some time," he said.
"We had a team out there with something like 11 kids who were 20 years or under. They’ve all come through our junior grades and there are not many clubs in Cairns who can do that."
Generation next was definitely on show for the Hawks with 16-year-olds Harry Hutchinson, Andrew Brown and Sam Michael all playing their part in the victory.
