If Souths midfielder Matt Kofoed torments Cairns Saints tomorrow then the defending AFL Cairns premiers might be pained to know how close he came to joining their club.
The Torquay native ended a two-year retirement to play in Cairns this season where good friend and former teammate Josh Martin was already settled at the Saints.
There was a temptation for Kofoed to link with Martin but other friends had raved about their experiences with Souths coach Steve Daniel.
"I knew both were both going to be well in contention for the premiership but in the end I went with Souths," Kofoed said.
Kofoed has not been given a reason to regret his decision. The Cutters are top of the ladder with only one defeat this season and are preparing to host Saints at Fretwell Park.
Last time the sides met in round 10 the Cutters survived a thrilling Saints fightback in the final two quarters before winning by four points in the match of the season.
While Saints have injury problems and will be without forward Matt Walsh and on-baller Matt Dwyer tomorrow, Kofoed said the Cutters would not underestimate their opponents
