The AFL has staked its claim on the next generation of rugby league stars with the signing of Karmichael Hunt, now it is looking to the Pacific to uncover a fresh batch of talent.
The AFL and Federal Governement will tonight stage a match at Cazalys between a team of promising players from Pacific Islands nations and the North Queensland All Stars.
Brisbane Lions triple premiership teammates Mal MIchael (Islanders) and darryl White (All Stars) will coach the teams.
The majority of the All Stars are drawn from the AFL Cairns competition, while there will also be players from townsville, Djarragun College, Tagai State College and Abergowrie College.
Players from New Zealand, Nauru, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga and Papua New Guinea will represent the Islanders. Many of the Islanders are from PNG with some living in Australia and others flying in for the match.
