Well, what a game! The US Freedom Women's AFL team gave Cairns a bloody good show! A good crowd enjoyed the fantastic BBQ from the Manunda Hawks Women's Club who even threw a few shrimps on the barbie to impress the visitors.
While the day started out not so well for Cairns with the AFL Cairns Womens League Rep Coach (Heather Flannery) pulling out due to suspected Swine Flu, there was a re-shuffle and in came assistant coach Laura Martin.
Only a couple of changes were made to the Cairns team's structure and they showcased the Cairns Team strength through the midfield in Mary David from the Cape Crusaders who took out Best on Ground for Cairns. Other stand outs for Cairns were Ashleigh Singleton, Asta Naden, Lauretta Dowling, Kareena White, Jane Elzinga, Kat Pender and Lauren James.
"I am finding it really hard to pick players who performed" said Mel Smith, organiser. "Everybody stood up, the whole team deserves a mention. We had players that were veterans to new comers and they all did great."
"We held the USA off from centre half back and through the middle, with the ball hardly moving though the backlines. They have a strong backline themselves and any point was hard fought" said Smith. "They are a very disciplined team, we were all impressed with their skill level. We wish them all well for the rest of their tour."
Best on Ground for the USA was player Captain Jenny Sarbacker, while Vice Captain Tina Arend had a quick visit to the Cairns Base Hospital for a few stitches in her lip.
Thanks to all the supporters, the Senior Boys from the AFL Cairns Mens League who got involved, the Umpires, Bluey Forsythe and especially AFL Cairns for their wonderful support and hospitality. All the USA girls were very impressed with the Cazaly's ground.
