Murray Football League club Congupna has won the prized signature of departing South Cairns coach Steve Daniel.
Daniel, who teaches at Djarragun College, confirmed last month he was leaving Cairns at the end of 2009 after three seasons in charge of the Cutters to return to Victoria for family reasons.
Before arriving in the Far North in 2007, Daniel won back-to-back premierships in 2005-06 with Goulburn Valley Football League side Seymour.
A host of clubs from different leagues chased the services of Daniel with Congupna, a small town 10km north of Shepparton, successful in landing the in-demand mentor.
While Daniel declined to comment on his future move, preferring to focus on winning a flag with the ladder-leading Cutters, Congupna Football and Netball club vice-president Robert Moon said he and his committee were delighted with the appointment.
"We’re very excited. His profile down here is bigger than what it is up there and it’s quite a big news story," he said.
"With our discussions with Steve, he said he was looking for a new challenge.
"He could have gone back to his old club Seymour and the Goulburn league but he’s already done that and he’s got quite a few mates in the area and didn’t want to be coaching against them.
"We’ve got a good, young list. He thinks he can take them to the next level and we’re happy to give him the chance."
