Young Cats rocket into final eight at National Champs

14 Boys (1) - The Team

Geelong has rocketed into the finals after finishing on top of their pool at the National Championships in Dandenong.

Another two wins on day four saw their tally mount to five wins from five encounters against the best under 14 teams from around the nation.

They clean swept their pool with wins against Illawarra Hawks and Southern Tigers on the final day of pool competition to emphatically book a place in the final eight.

Coach Chris Clyne said it hadn’t been all easy sailing.

“The Illawarra game was close for a fair bit and we ended up just getting in front and we also were down by fourteen against the Southern Tigers at one stage.

“They certainly haven’t been easy games. The boys have played the best basketball they’ve played all year,” he said.

Harrison Dolley kept up his impressive form with 33 points from the two games played on Wednesday.

Clyne also added that the boys had been enjoying the tournament and now find themselves in with a great chance to take the title out.

“They’ve been having a great time, it’s a really good, tough competition and it’s only going to get better now that they’ve made the top eight.

“Hopefully we can go a few steps further and come home with a medal.

“It’s an old cliché, but it’s all we need to keep doing, just keep winning one game at a time,” he said.

Geelong will meet fellow Victorian side Diamond Valley in Thursdays final eight clash after they finished second in Pool A. Coach Clyne said his charges were well and truly equipped for the game.

“We’ve played them twice throughout the VJBL (Victorian Junior Basketball League) season. They’ve beaten us by six points and we’ve beaten them by 12 so it could go either way.

“We’ve gone 5-0 and they’ve gone 3-2 this week and we’re full of confidence, but they’re a good basketball side. It will be another close game I suggest.”
