Championship Women (1-1):

Coach Grantley Bernard has accepted some of the responsibility for the Lady Cats’ ordinary performance against Waverley, which resulted in a 70-51 loss at The Arena. However most of the blame needs to be heaped on his playing group, who effectively handed the Falcons the contest in the first quarter, shooting at a woeful 2-19 from the field. The margin at the first break was 19, which would become the final margin. Despite the loss Bernard is remaining upbeat. “It's one game and one loss in a long season and we will respond in the right way,” he said. “Credit to Waverley for playing well at both ends of the court. They played how we need to play for the rest of the season.” The Lady Cats next assignment is against fellow play-off aspirants Diamond Valley on April 10.

Division 1 Men (2-1):

A Jason Reardon-inspired Geelong side has claimed its second win of the season against La Trobe University at Darebin 87-80, but not before a fight from the Students. The Cats had the game locked away at three-quarter time, holding a 26 point lead. However La Trobe was able to fight its way back into the contest, outscoring Geelong 34-15 in the final stanza. Reardon helped steady the ship with 26 points, 18 rebounds and six assists, while veteran guard Paul Hutchison finished with 23. “We need to play with the same intensity as the first and third quarters for the whole game to become a real threat in this competition,” coach Shayne Bow said. After three games on the road to start the season, the Cats make their 2010 home debut against Hawthorn on April 10.

Youth League Women (2-0):

Coach Kat Clancy will return from her honeymoon with an even bigger smile on her face, with her young team sitting unbeaten. Sunday’s 91-54 win over Altona at The Arena Annexe was almost a complete performance, with five players scoring in double figures, including captain Tash Daffy (15 points 11-12 ft’s). “It was great to get so many contributions,” acting coach Tom King said. “I was really impressed how the girls fought through some tough stages, especially when Altona got back to within eight points in the third quarter.” The Young Lady Cats sit on top of the ladder heading into Easter, but have a tough ask in round three with a trip to Waverley, who despite being winless, defeated Geelong at the pre-season tournament.

Youth League Men (1-1):

The Youth League men claimed an important win on the road against Sherbrooke. However they made it tougher than they should have. Leading by 14 at the final break, the Cats were outscored 42-33 by the Suns. However, they held their nerve down the stretch to take the points 112-107. Reigning MVP Steve Wiasak was the star with 28 points, including an impressive 17-22 from the charity stripe, as well as pulling in seven rebounds. He received strong support from Ben Scannell and Michael Rebula (18 points), and Chris Daniele (14). The Young Cats next clash is at home against Diamond Valley on April 10.
