Big V Pre-Season Tournament (update 2)

Basketball Geelong

A nailbiting 50-49 victory has given the Geelong Lady Cats their first ever piece of Big V silverware.

After finishing 2009 second last with a 3-15 record, the new-look squad went through the Big V pre-season tournament in Melbourne unbeaten.

They defeated Hume City in Monday morning's semi-final, before taking on perennial finalists Waverley in the afternoon's decider.

Absent from finals since the first year of the Big V conference in 2000, the tournament win is a pleasing sign for coach Grantley Bernard heading into the season opener against Bulleen at Templestowe Leisure Centre on March 21.

"It means that we have set a certain standard and expectation of ourselves for the season," coach Bernard said.

"The players appeared to get a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities and combined well as they got used to the strengths of new teammates, so that was probably more important than actually winning the tournament.

"The other aspect of the weekend was that the Lady Cats have started to show that we are going to fulfill our motto of Make It Matter."
