Championship
Women (11-2): vs. Bulleen (6-4) @ Templestowe Leisure Centre, Saturday 8.00pm
A victory on Saturday night will have a two-fold effect for the Lady
Cats. It will have them a win closer to coach Grantley Bernard’s target of 14
to guarantee a first playoff berth since 2000. It will also fend off a
challenger to Geelong’s
push for a top-two finish. The Cats are effectively a game further clear of the
Boomers by virtue of head-to-head, having won the two previous meetings between
the sides in 2010. However, they may have to do it without star shooter Kylie
Morrissy who is continuing to struggle with a knee injury. Morrissy has been
one of the stars of the competition, averaging 17ppg, 4.5 rpg and 3apg. Despite
the previous wins over Bulleen, coach Bernard is expecting a tough clash. “This will be a big game
for us against a team that is looking to make the playoffs. Bulleen really gave
us a tough time last time we played, so we know they are some things we need to
do better. But it still all gets down to defence, rebounding, execution and
playing as a team."
Division 1 Men (10-2): vs. Werribee (6-6) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday
7.00pm and vs. Altona (8-3) @ Altona Sports Centre, Sunday 3.00pm
A tough weekend confronts Shayne Bow’s men, with the Devils still in
play-off contention and the Gators sitting second. The return of Jason Reardon (23.2
ppg and 14rpg), after touring China
with an Andrew Gaze-coached squad, will be a timely boost for the Cats, while
the week off will have been welcomed by the veteran squad. Two wins will all
but lock in a finals berth. However two losses will see Altona replace Geelong in top spot. The
Cats were too good for Werribee when they first met back on May 1, with in-form
guard Paul Hutchison torching the Devils for 34 points. A form line for Geelong and Altona is a
little bit harder to gauge, with Sunday’s clash to be the first meeting between
the two sides in 2010. James Guljas has been the star for the Gators in 2010,
averaging 18.9 ppg and 13.4 rpg, and will be the Cats’ key target defensively.
Youth League
Women (7-6): vs. Hawthorn (7-5) @ Boorondara Sports Complex, Sunday 2.00pm
In footy it’s described as an eight point game. A win puts the Young Lady
Cats back in the frame for a play-off berth in their inaugural season. While a
loss will make life difficult for Kat Clancy’s young squad to return to the top
four with six games remaining. The last time the Young Lady Cats met Hawthorn it
was the Magic who prevailed 74-54. Clancy will be looking for a four quarter
effort from her inconsistent side, which has gone from the relative comfort of
6-3 before that first clash with Hawthorn to a precarious 7-6. “It’s a must win game for the girls
to keep our finals chances alive,” she said .Talented forward Jess Watson (15ppg) needs more scoring support from
fellow big Jess Barnard and, if available, Tayla Robertson if Geelong is to get
its season back on track.
Youth League Men (4-7): vs. Eltham (3-7) @ Eltham High School, Saturday
8.00pm & vs. Waverley
(7-4) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 1.00pm
Nothing
less than two wins will keep the play-off hopes of the Young Cats alive. Coach
Dave Brown will have Geelong
focused on beating the Wildcats to start the weekend, and only then turning
their focus to upsetting the Falcons on Sunday. With the senior Cats close to
full strength, Steve Wiasak should be available for both games. However his
inclusion won’t get it done for the Young Cats, and Supercats’ rookie trio
Chris Daniele, Lachie Headlam and Michael Rebula will need be effective if Geelong is to improve to
6-7 come the end of the weekend. Limiting the effectiveness of US College-bound
star Dexter Kernich-Drew (25.9) will be a key for the Young Cats against Waverley.
