Championship Women (15-5):
vs. Hume City (12-7) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday
3.00pm
With
a first Big V minor premiership confirmed for the Lady Cats, they’ll be looking
to prepare for a potential meeting against Hume City
during the playoffs with a final round victory against the Broncos. Geelong locked away top spot with a 75-70 win over Diamond Valley, which followed a tough 51-43
result against Eltham the night before. “It was a real character test that was passed with great
heart, courage, commitment and good basketball. The players deserve so much
credit and respect for what they have achieved so far this season. They have
been amazing,” coach Grantley Bernard said. One of the highlights of the
weekend was the return of Kylie Morrissy, scoring 20 points against Diamond Valley. She provides a key component of
the Lady Cats rotation which will be needed on Sunday against Hume City.
“We don't want a letdown and Hume will be gunning for second spot on the ladder.
We still have some work to do on our game, so this should be an excellent
opportunity to have ourselves ready for the playoffs." The last meeting
between the two sides was on May 29, with the Lady Cats winning 83-71.
Division
1 Men (16-3): vs. Melbourne University (13-6) @ Melbourne University
Sports Centre, Saturday 8.30pm
The Cats will be looking to take a psychological advantage into the
playoffs, with Melbourne University a potential
grand final opponent. Geelong
had no problem in disposing of Keysborough 97-62 in Sunday’s clash. Jason
Reardon’s class again shone through, finishing with 32 points, 18 rebounds and
five assists to further enhance his league MVP prospects. He wasn’t alone
though, with veteran big Marty De Lange impressive in compiling 17 points, nine
rebounds and four assists. Chris Brown also dished four assists, to go with 14
points and nine rebounds in a classy team performance by the Cats. “Good defence and offence created
opportunities for us all the way through the game, which meant we could give
every player valuable minutes,” coach Shayne Bow said. Despite being
comfortably locked away in top spot, Bow will be keen to make it 17 wins for
the season against the second placed Black Angels. “We will need to still be on
our game to take this one out. There is no room for becoming complacent.” In their only meeting of 2010, the Cats defeated Uni
77-66 back in round 11.
Youth League Women (9-10):
vs. Melbourne
Tigers (12-6) @ The Arena Showcourt, Saturday 5.30pm
The
success of the Young Lady Cats inaugural season shouldn’t be judged on the
win-loss column. Despite being disappointed at missing the playoffs after
starting the season with a 7-4 record, coach Kat Clancy has been able to
develop a squad that are all eligible for the 23 and under competition in 2011.
The average age of the squad barely scrapes 20, and with the exposure they’ve
had to Youth League competition, Geelong
will go into next season full of confidence at their ability to match it with
the league’s best, which includes pushing playoff bound Eltham all the way
before going down 65-56. However before turning their attention to 2011, the
Young Lady Cats are keen to go out with a bang in their second match as a
curtain raiser to the Supercats. The last time they met the Tigers, Geelong was outclassed
79-40 in arguably its worst performance of the season. Melbourne
still have plenty to play for, needing a win to finish third and avoid a
meeting with the powerful Diamond Valley combination in the
opening round of the finals.
Youth
League Men (8-8): vs. Bulleen (3-14) @ Templestowe Leisure Centre, Saturday 8.00pm
& vs. Melbourne
Tigers (15-2) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 1.00pm.
The Young Cats should be going into the final round knowing two wins
would give them a chance of a surprise playoff berth in their first season in
Youth League 1. However, last week’s 98-89 loss to Diamond Valley,
after they led by 20 points at half time, killed off their hopes of August
action. Steve Wiasak almost carried Geelong
to what would have been a shock win over the competition favourites. He
finished with an impressive 38 points, along with seven rebounds, two assists
and two steals. The loss to the Eagles isn’t the only result to haunt Dave
Brown’s roster, with losses to Hawthorn (4-13) in both their early season
meetings against the Magic coming back to bite them. Like the Young Lady Cats,
a majority of the Young Cats will be back in 2011 ensuring the future of men’s
basketball in Geelong
is in good hands. Although finals are off the agenda, two wins to give the
Young Cats a 10-8 record to end the season would be a fitting conclusion. Geelong should take care
of lowly Bulleen on Saturday night, before returning home on Sunday for a
meeting with Melbourne, who handed the Young Cats are 44 point hammering back
on May 15.
