Championship Women (13-4):
vs. Waverley (8-7)
@ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 1.00pm
A
win for the Lady Cats on Sunday will have a two-fold effect. Firstly, it will
snap a two game losing streak. Secondly it will ensure a first-ever Big V State
Championship minor premiership and home-court advantage during the playoffs. Geelong’s lack of depth was again on show in last week’s
68-53 loss to Melbourne,
with Kylie Morrissy, Vicki King, Lauren Green and Ash Hatton all missing from
the 11 man roster. “Injuries
and unavailbility left us short-handed but there was no way to fault the
effort and endeavour of those who suited up,” coach Grantley Bernard said. “We matched
the Tigers in pretty much every aspect, but the simple difference was they made
some shots and we didn't." Bernard is now looking forward to taking on a Waverley roster that
still has a top four finish in its sights. “(It’s) another tough test, but one
we can pass with improved offensive execution and shooting,” he said “We just
need to get back to doing our basics well and things will fall back into place
for us."
Division 1 Men (14-3): vs. Sunbury (7-9) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 3.00pm
The
Cats are guaranteed to finish top two following Sunday’s 98-81 win over
Whittlesea. However with MelbourneUniversity snapping at
their heels for top spot, and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs,
coach Shayne Bow will be making sure there is no let up against the Jets. “(We)
need to play four
quarters of basketball to be a serious contender in the finals,” Bow said
after Geelong
was outscored 49-40 in the second half of the win over the Pacers. The Cats
rivalry with Sunbury has been an intense one since Geelong returned to Division One in 2008,
with the Jets claiming that year’s grand final series in three matches. The
improved shooting of Dane Bow- who has hauls of 21 and 17 in his past two
outings- has provided the Geelong
with another scoring option to help Jason Reardon, Paul Hutchison and Chris
Brown. The first meeting between Geelong
and Sunbury resulted in an 80-72 win for the Cats.
Youth League Women (8-9): vs. Ringwood
(6-11) @ The Arena, Saturday 5.30pm
The Young
Lady Cats flickering playoff hopes may have been extinguished by Saturday’s
last second 55-53 loss to second-placed Waverley. In a gusty performance, Geelong came from 16
points down at half-time to tie the scores with 20 seconds remaining against
the Falcons thanks to a three point bomb from Ebony Tannouri (18 points).
However the Falcons, who brought a 12 game winning streak into the match, were
able to have the final say and score near the buzzer. “(It was) the best game
the girls have played since the first half of the season,” coach Kat Clancy
said. “(Our) intensity in the second half was brilliant. “If we play like this
every week we would be guaranteed a finals place!” Saturday night’s clash with
Ringwood will be the Young Lady Cats first ever appearance on The Arena
Showcourt, as a curtain-raiser to the Supercats’ clash with Canberra. The last time they met, Geelong prevailed 69-64.
Youth
League Men (8-7): Bye
The Young Cats will have another week off before
they prepare for a tough finish to the season. Geelong
defeated HumeCity 82-71, thanks to an even spread of
contributions. Steve Wiasak (18 points), Andy
Przybylkiewicz(15) and Michael Rebula (14) making sure they continue to share fourth spot with Waverley.
However if the Young Cats and Falcons share the same win-loss record at the end
of the regular season, Waverley will snare four spot by virtue of head-to-head.
After this week’s bye the Cats face a tough trip to ladder leader DiamondValley. They then finish the season with
a road-home double against lowly Bulleen and second placed Melbourne. Waverley’s
run home includes clashes with Bulleen, Sherbrooke
and HumeCity. With the DiamondValley and Melbourne
games expected to be tough to win, a victory over Bulleen and three Waverley losses will
guarantee a surprise playoff berth.
