Big V Preview Round 1

Division One Men (0-0): vs. Werribee (0-0) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday 8.00pm

After suffering their second grand final loss in three years, the Cats return in 2011 keen to atone for the loss to Melbourne University back in August. Coach Shayne Bow will again take charge of a talented roster, which will give chances to young guns Ben Scannell, Chris Daniele and Ben McCawley this season. Reigning league and club MVP Jason Reardon is set to play, despite also signaling an intention to play football with GDFL side Anakie. The former Supercat will again shoulder much of the workload, but will have veteran duo Paul Hutchison and Marty DeLange for support. With Dane Bow also returning, the Cats have no shortage of perimeter threats. However the loss of the talented Chris Brown will be felt, especially on the boards. Werribee will be an interesting test first-up. The Devils have added Rohan Bishop from Altona and Mark Rizza from Bulleen, but lost veteran big Nathan Marsh to Coburg.

State Youth Championship One Men (0-0): vs. Hawthorn (0-0) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday 6.00pm

Former Big V player Luke Beauglehall replaces ex-Scottish international Dave Brown in charge of the Cats. He will have a similar roster to that which just missed the playoffs last season, and will be able to call on Supercats’ rookies Michael Rebula, Lachie Headlam, Lewie Varley, Nathan Friend and Marcus Larcombe for the clash with the Magic. “We have had a productive preseason, worked hard on new structures, as well as introducing new players to the system,” Beauglehall said. “The guys have stepped up in the last couple of weeks and showed really well during practice matches. I’m personally looking forward to watching the boys, after they worked really hard in the preseason. It should be a good match up for the first game.” Sweet-shooting guard Emerson Varley, who has returned from an injury-affected stint with the Ballarat Nuggets, will miss after recent surgery on his ankle.

State Youth Championship Women (0-0): vs. Sunbury (0-0) @ Boardman Stadium, Sunday 3.00pm

Entering their second season, the Cats will play a different role in the local basketball landscape. Last year they were a set roster, playing underneath the ultimately successful State Championship Women. In 2011t they will act as a development program for the newly formed Supercats’ women. Kat Clancy has again been handed the reins, and will be joined by newly-appointed assistant Aaron Donaldson for the clash with newcomers Sunbury. With the SEABL season still a fortnight away, Jess Watson and Ellie Stevens have been made available by Lady Supercats’ coach Paul O’Brien, while Sophie Templeton will use her experience from last year's Big V State Championship Women success to guide Geelong on the floor. “The squad has had a great preparation to the upcoming season with a focus on fitness, technique and teamwork,” Donaldson said. “The whole team is excited to get the season underway and they’re determined to improve on their record (9-11) from last year.”
