Big V Preview Round 2

Ben McCawley

Division One Men (1-0): Bye

After a less than convincing season-opening win over Werribee, the Cats have the weekend off, giving coach Shayne Bow another fortnight to tweak his team’s offensive sets. Geelong scraped home over the Devils 59-55, despite shooting woefully from the field (37.3%), beyond the arc (14.3%) and from the charity stripe (56.5%). Jason Reardon’s undoubted class shone through, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while skipper Paul Hutchison had 13 points and Steve Wiasak 12. Importantly, the Cats were able to get minutes into a trio of juniors, including former Supercats’ rookie Chris Daniele, shooting guard Ben Scannell and promising big Ben McCawley. Daniele was especially impressive, controlling the floor, and freeing up Hutchison to play his natural game.

State Youth Championship One Men (1-0): vs. Melbourne (1-0) @ Oakleigh Recreation Centre, Saturday 7.30pm

A meeting with powerhouse Melbourne will give the Cats a good indication where they sit in the Youth Championship pecking order just a fortnight into the season. Geelong snuck home with a 76-74 win over usual nemesis Hawthorn, thanks to 25 points from Supercats’ rookie Michael Rebula in rookie coach Luke Beauglehall’s first game in charge. Fellow Supercats’ rookies Lachie Headlam and Marcus Larcombe provided the support with 10 points each. All three are likely to be available for the clash with the Tigers, who are coming off a 71-54 opening round win over Sherbrooke. Craig Martin and Muka Silver will provide the offensive output for a deep Melbourne roster.

State Youth Championship Women (1-0): vs. Whittlesea (0-1) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 12.00pm

The Cats showed Youth Championship newcomer Sunbury little mercy in an 80-42 smashing to open the season. Lady Supercat Jess Watson made the most of playing some minutes back in Youth Championship, dropping 29 points and hauling in 14 rebounds. There was plenty of support too, with fellow Lady Supercat Ellie Stevens finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists, and Jess Barnard having 13 points and 10 rebounds. “Our tall’s dominated, taking advantage of the height difference between the two teams,” coach Kat Clancy said. Despite the margin, Clancy is not getting carried away. “(It was) a great performance by the team, however a better defensive performance will be needed to succeed against the title contenders.” Geelong meets a Whittlesea team coming off a 29 point hiding at the hands of Bulleen, 76-47, where Alira Mihocic was the Pacers only offensive threat, scoring 16 points.
