Big V Preview Round 4

Division One Men (6th 2-1): vs. Chelsea (4th 2-1) @ Patterson River, Sunday 3.00pm

The importance of Jason Reardon to the Cats was never better underlined than last weekend. Without him on Saturday night, Geelong fell to Whittlesea 86-67. When he suited up on Sunday, they were able to come from 11 points down at half-time to roll Warrnambool 74-67. Reardon, who missed the loss to the Pacers having been part of Anakie’s win over North Geelong in the opening round of the GDFL season, had a match-influencing 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals against the Seahawks. Veteran guard Paul Hutchison was also impressive across the weekend, including a haul of 20 against Warrnambool. This week’s opponent Chelsea has struggled in recent seasons, including a stint in Division Two. However they’ve returned to Division One rejuvenated, with a talented roster and a new stadium. They were disappointing last week in going down to Southern Peninsula 90-64.

State Youth Championship One Men (4th 2-1): vs. Waverley (9th 1-2) @ Waverley Basketball Centre, Saturday 8.00pm

The Cats did on Sunday what good teams should do the weaker ones, dispatching Bulleen 113-76. Following an even first quarter, after which Geelong held just a one point advantage, they proceeded to end the game as a contest with a 36-13 second quarter, to take a 56-32 lead into the main break. Five players scored in double figures, with Supercats’ rookie Michael Rebula again the star with 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Teammate Nathan Freind also impressed on debut, knocking down 20 points and hauling in 11 boards. Although holding a 1-2 record, the Falcons at home will provide the Cats, and stand-in coach Glenn Dyett, with a test. Rebula is expected to be on the Supercats’ bench for the trip to Sandringham, while Lachie Headlam may also be called up to Jamie O’Loughlin’s squad.

State Youth Championship Women (2nd 2-1): vs. Hawthorn (6th 1-2) @ Boorondara Sports Complex, Saturday 7.30pm

Geelong came away from a tricky trip to Ringwood with a gutsy one point win, 59-58. However coach Kat Clancy is well aware the Cats wouldn’t have claimed victory without the availability of Lady Supercats rookies Jess Watson and Ellie Stevens. Watson contributed 11 points (despite shooting a horrible 2/13 from the field) and 14 rebounds. While Stevens had nine points, six rebounds and four steals. However both played in the shadow of improving big Jess Barnard. She finished with 14 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks. “‘Barney’ is proving to be the star centre of the competition, grabbing rebounds from both ends of the court and becoming more of an offensive threat,” coach Kat Clancy said. This week sees the Cats travel to Hawthorn to take on the Magic, last year’s runner-up. Watson and Stevens will both be missing through Lady Supercats commitments. “Now to continue this form in the coming weeks without the Supercats players,” Clancy mused.
