Big V Easter Wrap

Jess Watson

Division One Men (2nd 4-1)

The Cats scored an important pre-Easter win over Whittlesea 90-77, leaving them well placed in second position behind Southern Peninsula. Only two weeks prior the Pacers handed Geelong a 21 point hiding. However that night they were without Jason Reardon. This time with him in the line-up it was a different result. Reardon had 21 points and 18 rebounds, while Marty De Lange wound back the clock with a vintage 22 point performance, including an impressive 3-from-4 outside the arc. The fine form of Steve Wiasak also continued. He had 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, five of them on the offensive end. “We started off slow,” coach Shayne Bow said. “We needed to hit our straps in the third quarter, and we did by capitalising on getting on the boards, (and) outscoring Whittlesea 30-19. The boys will have a good rest over Easter and we will come back to Sunbury on April 30 which will be tough.”

State Youth Championship One Men (4th 3-2)

Geelong proved it can win without key trio Michael Rebula, Lachlan Headlam (both Supercats) and Nathan Freind (unavailable), sneaking past Sherbrooke 77-76. It’s something they’ll have to get used to, with Rebula and Headlam starting to gain a foothold in the Supercats’ squad. Talented big Ben McCawley filled the void admirably with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The Varley brothers- Lewie (17 points) and Emerson (12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists)- along with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists from Marcus Larcombe, provided the support. “Sherbrooke had us for 3½  quarters but to the boys credit they stuck with them and grinded out a tough win,” coach Luke Beauglehall said. Our defence really stepped up in the last couple of minutes allowing us to get the edge. With a weeks break we need to keep our focus as the return game is against a very strong Diamond Valley who have set the pace early on this season.”

State Youth Championship Women (4th 3-2)

It wasn’t pretty, but the result was the desired one for coach Kat Clancy. The Cats head into the Easter break with a 3-2 record thanks to a scrappy 50-42 win over Bulleen. Once again the addition of Lady Supercats duo Jess Watson and Ellie Stevens proved important. “The execution of basic offense and defense principles during the clutch times of the game improved dramatically. Their experience in the last three minutes showed against a less experienced Bulleen team, coach Kat Clancy said. Between them they had 23 points and 20 rebounds, while Watson also dished four assists. Point guard Sophie Templeton was also important with 11 points and six rebounds, while Lauren Bellegante (10 points) gave Geelong four players in double figures. “3-2 at the Easter break is great, but there's a long way to go in the season,” Clancy said. “We should really be 4-1, but that's life. A tough three weeks after the break is lined up with the Supercats players unavailable.”
