Basketball Geelong Championship Wrap Round 1

Dolphins’ debut in Basketball Geelong Championship’s women’s division has been a winning one, coming from 11 points down at three-quarter time to beat YMCA 68-67.

Hayley Wood was the final quarter star, scoring 10 of her 21 points, including two three’s.

Lady Supercat duo Alex Sheedy (22 points) and Cortney Williamson (15) ensured Dolphins were within striking distance at the last break.

Ebony Coppock was Y’s best with 20 points.

Lara’s first appearance in local basketball’s top flight was a contrasting one to Dolphins, hammered 92-39 by Try Boys.

Despite a one-off appearance from Lady Supercats’ import Chelsea Aubry (13 points), the Giants had no match for the one-two punch of Anisa Sijersic (31 points) and Anna Teague (26).

Former Lady Cat Ana Marinovic made a welcome return to domestic basketball with a 16 point haul in Pivot City’s 59-48 victory over Sharks.

State Youth Championship captain Sharon Ford led Sharks with 17 points.

YMCA and Sharks produced the closest match-up on the opening night of men’s competition.

Y, who led by just three at half-time, prevailed 64-51 thanks to a 34-24 second half.

Big V Cat Pete Van der Burg led all scorers with 15 for Y, while Craig Jarvis had 14 for Sharks.

A 20-6 first quarter proved to be the difference in Christian College Eagles White’s 74-52 win over Rovers.

Keith Harrison carried over his solid form from the SEABL with 25 points.

Former Ballarat star Brett Goodgame finished with 21 points for Rovers.

A 35 point haul from improving big Ben McCawley hasn’t been enough for Dolphins to take the points off Try Boys.

The Bears getting a first-up victory 92-67, with usual suspects Patrick Phillips (23 points), Paul Hutchison (20) and Marty De Lange (18) doing the damage.

Vytis had to work hard for its 84-69 win over Tigers.

The Knights led by Supercats’ rookies Michael Rebula (25 points) and Lachie Headlam (16 points).

Rob Harding had 19 for Tigers.

Pivot City had few problems with Lara, getting home 74-47.

Five players scored in double figures, including Wes Picket, who had a game high 14 points.

Addison Daly was the Giants’ best with 12 points.
