Big V Preview Round 11

Division One Men (1st 8-2): vs. Melbourne University (6th 6-6) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 2.00pm

If Geelong wasn’t premiership favourites before Sunday’s win over Southern Peninsula, they are now. The Cats dismantled the Sharks 91-46 to move a game clear at the top of table, and send the Rosebud-based club tumbling from second to fifth on the ladder. Making the victory more meritorious was the fact Jason Reardon played less than a minute because of injury concerns. As a result the entire roster stood up to be counted. Five players scored in double-figures, with 42 points coming from the bench. Chris Brown, who took Reardon’s spot, finished with eight points, 12 rebounds and three steals. “It was one of the best team efforts I have seen in two years of coaching this side,” Shayne Bow said. Geelong won the first clash with Melbourne Uni 85-77 back on May 21. “It doesn't matter where they are on the ladder, they are always a threat. We hope to display the same intensity and team effort as we did against Southern Peninsula.”

State Youth Championship One Men (8th 4-6): vs. Diamond Valley (2nd 9-2) @ Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre and vs. Waverley (5th 6-4) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 12.00pm

Anything less than two wins this weekend for the Cats, and they can all but kiss their finals hopes goodbye. Geelong blew a golden opportunity to square their win/loss ledger at 5-5, but couldn’t get the job done in overtime against cellar-dweller Bulleen, going down 81-80. Lewie Varley did all he could to get the Cats’ home, finishing with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Ben McCawley had 21 and 13. The clash on the road against Diamond Valley on Saturday night is almost mission impossible, while Sunday’s home meeting with Waverley will also be tough for Luke Beauglehall’s charges. They should have Supercats’ duo Michael Rebula and Lachie Headlam back for the clash with Waverley, while Nathan Freind is set to play both. “This weekend will be our toughest (of the year),” coach Beauglehall said. “We play Diamond Valley on Saturday night who beat us by 54 early in the year and then back it up Sunday against another title contender in Waverley.”

State Youth Championship Women (3rd Watson Conference 6-4): vs. Warrandyte (7th Terrill Conference 0-11) @ Warrandyte Sports Complex, Saturday 6.00pm

Geelong coach Kat Clancy was fuming following Sunday’s 66-64 overtime loss to Hawthorn. The Cats led by as much as nine during the final quarter, but couldn’t protect their lead. Geelong also missed the opportunity to consolidate second spot on what is turning out to be a congested Watson Conference ladder. “It was a game that should have been won and could cost us a place in the finals,” Clancy said. Lady Supercat Jess Watson again provided the offensive and defensive output, finishing with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Ang McDonagh also worked hard with 11 points and five rebound. Youngster Emma Leeds also impressed coach Clancy. “She stepped up when needed and has a great future ahead of her.” Watson, along with Ellie Stevens, are likely to miss the first ever meeting with the Venom, who are winless in 2011, due to Lady Supercats’ commitment. However, captain Sharod Ford will play after missing the loss to the Magic.
