Division One Men (1st 10-4): vs. Chelsea (5th 8-6) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday 8.00pm

Wins last weekend over Sunbury and Altona have given Geelong back top spot on the Big V Division One men’s ladder. The Cats had few problems in putting away Sunbury 100-76 on Saturday night. They backed that performance up on Sunday with a 98-71 result against the Gators to sit 10-4 with Whittlesea. “The pleasing thing was that the stats were shared around and not one player dominated,” coach Shayne Bow said. The most impressive figure was the scoring which came from the Geelong bench, with 51 against Sunbury and 47 against Altona. “This also shows the depth of our team, and hopefully we can maintain this for the rest of the season,” Bow added. Chelsea sits fifth on the ladder, but can pull to within a game of the Cats if they leave The Arena Annexe with the points. “They are playing for a finals berth so we will need to be sharp,” Bow concluded.

State Youth Championship One Men (9th 5-10): vs. Melbourne (3rd 11-3) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 12.00pm

The season is officially shot for Geelong’s State Youth Championship men, with weekend losses to Eltham and Altona even ruling out a mathematical chance of the Cats seeing August action. Geelong pushed the Wildcats all the way on Saturday night, before succumbing 78-73. Sunday’s clash with the Gators was a different story, smashed 93-65. “Saturday was a tough loss,” coach Luke Beauglehall said of the loss to Eltham. “The boys played solid defense all night, but just couldn't get the crucial baskets to drop at the other end. (It was) a vast improvement from the last time we met them. On Sunday the Cats were in trouble by quarter-time, trailing 22-11. “With four players playing their third game for the weekend, and losing Lewis Varley to an ankle injury in the third quarter, we ran out of legs in the end.” Beauglehall will have an almost full squad at his disposal for a clash against the powerhouse Melbourne Tigers.

State Youth Championship Women (4th Watson Conference 7-6): vs. Craigieburn (6th Terril Conference 4-10) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday 6.00pm and Eltham (2nd Watson Conference 9-5) @ Eltham High School, Sunday 1.00pm

Geelong faces a crucial weekend in State Youth Championship women’s action, with anything worse than a 1-1 win/loss record likely to be fatal for the Cats’ finals chances. Despite the addition of former Lady Cats’ star Prue Kenny and talented young guard Emily Dorning, Geelong was no match last weekend for Terril Conference powerhouse Waverley, going down 82-49. “One quarter is all it took for us to lose the game,” coach Kat Clancy said. “We played brilliant in the first quarter, but then things went astray in the second. Our offensive structure fell apart due to the intensity of Waverley's defence after quarter time. We need to learn to be patient, don't panic and just work our way through intense defence.” Saturday night’s clash with the Eagles will be the first-ever between the two teams. While on Sunday they’ll be trying to make it two-from-two against the Wildcats in 2011.
