Division One Men (1st 15-5): vs. Melbourne University (4th 12-8) @ Melbourne University Sports Centre, Saturday 7.00pm

Geelong warmed up for a third playoff campaign in four years with a comfortable 95-61 result against Altona. Coach Shayne Bow was able to get solid minutes into his entire roster, with no player hitting the court for less than 10 minutes and Jason Reardon the only Cat to play more than 20. He finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to further enhance his chances of consecutive league MVP awards. Geelong will be hoping to go one-up in the series against the Black Angels, who defeated the Cats to win last year’s Division One championship. “We are one apiece in the home-and-away series and we need to take into this game what we had against Altona for the last game of the season,” Bow said.  “Everyone will need to bring their A-game if we are going to put them to rest.” Game two will be next Saturday night at The Arena Annexe, with game three, if required, the following day.

State Youth Championship One Men (9th 6-13): Season finished

A disappointing season ended in disappointing fashion for the Cats, dropping their clash with Altona 66-58. Already missing Nathan Freind, Michael Rebula and Lachie Headlam on Supercats’ duty, their depth was further tested when star youngster Lewie Varley found himself in early foul trouble. Marcus Larcombe (15 points) and Varley’s older brother Emerson (14 points) tried to pick up the slack but to no avail. “Altona was always going to be tough to finish with,” coach Luke Beauglehall said. “But, the boys fought out a tough game and to there credit didn't let the game blow out. (It was) a tough season for us as we were only able to field our strongest team twice during the season, leaving us vulnerable throughout the year. However, this gave us a good opportunity to blood some younger players we might not have used otherwise.”

State Youth Championship Women (4th Watson Conference 10-9): vs. Melbourne (1st Terril Conference 17-2) @ North Melbourne Recreation Centre, Saturday 5.30pm

A slow start has cost Geelong any chance of victory in its final round clash with Bulleen, trailing 43-19 at half-time, before suffering an 81-59 defeat. Again missing Jess Watson and Ellie Stevens to Lady Supercats’ commitments, they lacked a really potent offensive weapon. Jess Barnard was solid with 14 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. “We knew their transition game was going to be difficult to counteract,” coach Kat Clancy said. “But, we weren't prepared to run with them, allowing them easy uncontested shots.” Despite the loss, the Cats will see post-season action in just their second season in the competition with a cut-throat clash against Melbourne. Geelong met the Tigers just once during the regular season, with the Tigers coming away with a 67-44 win. Watson is expected to play, however College-bound Stevens is unlikely.
