Under 16 Boys Round 6

Geelong Cats 61 lost to Blackburn 63

Top Scorers: B. Mayes 19, G. Blagojevic 14, J. Pupavac 12

Coach’s Comment: Geelong played Blackburn away in this game of the lower ranked teams in VC. The foul count was higher than the score for the most part; however the game was a close affair, notwithstanding the high frustration levels. At the half the scores were 35 all with about 40% of the team in foul trouble. By the end of the game we had four players fouled out and lost the game by three points leaving the boys with an empty feeling after some of the most bizarre decisions experienced all season. To their credit the Geelong boys came back from a 10-point deficit to get within a point with five seconds to go, however what appeared to be an obvious hacking foul under the ring didn’t go our way and the game was over shortly afterwards.”

Under 12 Girls Round 6

Geelong Cats 32 def. Altona 20

Top Scorers: Z. McKeegan 13, O. Virt 6, E. Kramer 5

Coach’s Comment: “Altona was always going to be a challenging game, having played and been defeated by them in the grand final of the National Junior Classic. To the girls credit we stuck to our game plan and played a great composed game throughout the four quarters to come away with the points.”

Geelong Cats 30 lost to Hawthorn 49

Coach’s Comment: We matched up against Hawthorn on Friday night at home in a match that we would have loved to have won to try and maintain some pressure on other teams going into the finals.  To say that foul shots win matches is an understatement, but we made a very poor nine from 28 foul shots, missing 19 gettable points.  The final margin was 19 points.  In contrast, our Hawthorn missed only one foul shot for the night.  This inability to maintain scoreboard pressure cost us again.  Also our decision not to obey the team rules when rebounding foul shots, probably cost us another twenty points. Mikaela Watson had a huge defensive game for us and Bronte Burke continued her form this season topping the scorers.

Top Scorers: C. Horvat 14, S. Savickas 8, A. Troy 7

Coach’s Comment: “The girls tried hard and showed class most of the game but bad patches hurt us. We failed to play our game. Didn’t run offences and made basic errors.”

Under 12 Boys Round 6

Geelong Cats 38 drew with Blackburn

Top Scorers: H. Marshall 10, L. Hanley 9, A. Forsyth 6

Coach’s Comment: “Coming into the game two players short and on the road had us on the back foot before the clock had even started. A scrappy game plagued with free-throws and foul trouble ignited in the last quarter. We were able to take a small lead late, but holding it was going to be a massive task with three starters out. It took a prayer on the buzzer to take the win away from us, a fantastic effort by the boys both on the court, and the three held to making noise off the bench. A lot of heart and persistence was on display that night. Fingers crossed the next time we`ll be the ones that catch the break! “

Coach’s Comment: “A better game than last week. We ran hard and with our two tallest layers missing. We stepped up and did a good job on the boards. We faced some strong defence and will work on our offence as we will certainly face off again in the finals.”
