Under 16 Boys Round 7

Geelong Cats 31 lost to Melbourne 51

Top Scorers: G. Blagojevic 12, R. Kennedy 5, B. Mayes 5

Coach’s Comment: “Geelong played a home game against Melbourne at Werribee, with chances to make the finals running out making this a crucial game. Unfortunately the Tigers got off to a great start while our boys were caught out and by quarter time we were already looking at a 20-point deficit. For the rest of the game it was reasonably even, however that was not enough for a much needed win. At the half we were down 39-14 and that resulted in a 20-point loss to a team that wanted it more on the night.”

Geelong Cats 29 lost to Knox (2) 32

Top Scorers: Z. McKeegan 8, E. Braslis 8, M. Scarlett 6

Coach’s Comment: “Having played a great game the previous week, we came into this game full of confidence, but were shut down early by Knox, giving them a 9 to 2 head start in the first quarter.   From then on it was catch up basketball with time and fouls getting the better of us at the end.”

Geelong Cats 44 lost to Nunawading (2) 65

Coach’s Comment: “A trip to Nunawading on a Friday night is always a daunting affair, and this week was no different.  We started off unusually slowly, with our opposition getting out to a handy lead midway through the first quarter.  We were able to peg them back with some smart defence leading to some good transition baskets at the other end.  Just before half time, we drew level, but lapses in concentration cost us a couple of baskets before the half and had us down by double figures.  The less talked about our dreaded third quarter curse the better, but needless to say, we must keep the scoreboard ticking over.  We again won the last quarter, but the damage had already been done.  Without the third quarter, we actually won the game, which shows we have the goods to match it with teams, but not for four quarters.  Mikaela Watson led the scoring with a great shooting touch and Alysha Farnsworth and Zoe Dixon played noteworthy games.”

Coach’s Comment: “We had the type of game that basketball lover’s dream of, and coaches get the most satisfaction from- pressure defence, classy ball movement, crisp passing and some fantastic individual moves which took advantage of the created space. Decision-making on offense was excellent all night, and our defence was much more consistent, doing a very good job of maintaining and extending the early lead we`d earned. Excellent work boys.”
