Geelong Cats 39 def. Waverley 38

Coach’s Comment: “We went to Waverley with only seven players and played with some passion and determination in this game. It was close all night with half time scores Geelong 18 to Waverley 19. The boys really put in a team effort and the game went right down to the wire. A made shot either way would decide the game and with a free throw to put us in front by three near the end we hung on to win by a point. Nothing to lose for the final round, so bring on Bulleen.”
Under 12 Girls Round 8
Geelong Cats 42 def. Dandenong 26
Top Scorers: Z. McKeegan 18, E. Braslis 8, O. Virt 8
Coach’s Comment: “A great team game. Our talls were strong under the rings at both ends of the court and our smalls contributed equally as well with great pace up and down the court. A good win leading into the final game and finals.”

Geelong Cats 56 def. Broadmeadows 53
Top Scorers: S. Welfare 24
Coach’s Comment: This was the first part of a two-part novel, with us having to win to keep our race alive to the finals. For our part, we had beaten Broadmeadows three times during the year and felt pretty confident, although we knew they weren’t just going to hand the match to us. Throughout the game, we always seemed in control, playing some good defence, and running through our sets offensively. But as is customary, we decided that we would give our supporters something to worry about and let Broadmeadows back into the game after a couple of very silly turnovers at the start of the last quarter. However, some controlled foul shooting and some big stops on defence, made us complete the first round of our double. Sarah Welfare played her best game of the season, netting 24 points, and Jess Christiaans also worked hard at both ends of the floor. A simple equation now awaits us, a win this week will see us through to play offs in the coach’s 200th game in charge of a Geelong team.

Coach’s Comment: “With injured players recovering well, we played much more like our old
style. After a steady first half, we put the opposition to bed in the third quarter, shooting well and playing strategically to draw away. We've learnt well from the last three losses and go into the finals with a double chance and our sights set on the last match in September.”

Coach’s Comment: “It's the 38 minutes where you don't have the ball in your hand that matters most. In particular, our failure to get the ball through hands in offensive transition cost us greatly. Looking forward to the bye this week.”
