Basketball Geelong Championship Wrap Finals Week 1

PIVOT City has booked a spot in the Basketball Geelong Championship men’s grand final with a 55-50 win over Try Boys in Tuesday night’s second semi-final.

The Pivotonians opened the better, with veteran big man James Walker scoring nine points in the opening quarter to help the minor premier to a 12-6 advantage at the first break.

Like the opening period, defence dominated in the second and it was Pivot City which took a 26-19 advantage into half-time.

After the break Try Boys’ veteran Paul Hutchison (16 points) started to have an influence, scoring six third-quarter points to help cut the margin to five.

However, Pivot City would take the honours as both teams went basket-for-basket in the final term.

Jason Reardon proved influential with nine of his game-high 21 points coming in the last quarter.

The Pivotonians will now have a week off and await the winner of next Tuesday’s Try Boys-Vytis preliminary final.

The Knights earning a spot in the last three for the first time recent memory with a 71-48 win over YMCA in the first-semi.

Supercats’ rookies Michael Rebula (29 points) and Lachie Headlam (19) combined to help Vytis to an upset win.

They held the lead at every change after opening up a nine-point buffer at quarter-time, and put an exclamation mark on the match with a 20-9 final term.

MEANWHILE Try Boys have handed Pivot City its first loss of the season in the women’s second semi-final.

The Bears, who again benefited from the Anna Teague (25 points) and Anisa Sijersic (20) combination, were able to claim a 58-50 win thanks to an impressive third quarter.

They were able to turn a four-point advantage at half-time into a 10-point buffer at the last break after outscoring Pivot 21-15.

Ebony Tannouri was best for the minor premier, who were missing MVP contender Ana Marinovic, with 14 points

Olivia Cameron had 12 points, but was scoreless after half-time.

They’ll now meet Rovers in the preliminary final after its 73-40 smashing of finals debutants Dolphins.

After trailing by one at quarter-time, Rovers ended the game as a contest in the second term, outscoring their opponents 17-3.

Jess Watson had 25 points- but it could have been more after going one-of-eight from the free-throw line- while Lauren Bellegante finished with 20.

Kim Martin was best for Dolphins with 12.
