New Basketball CEO

Basketball Geelong and the St Laurence Geelong Supercats have today announced the appointment of Mr. Andrew Scotford as its new Chief Executive.

Scotford will commence as the Chief Executive of Basketball Geelong on Tuesday, April 10th.

Scotford is currently the Cricket Manager of the Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) which he commenced in 2010 following appointments as the Cricket Australia Cricket Umpire and Australian Volleyball Federation as CEO where he served for 7 years.

Over the next 6 weeks the Boards of the Supercats and Basketball Geelong will seek approval from their respective voting members to hand over the governance of their organisations to the Basketball Geelong Commission which will comprise 7 Commissioners plus the newly appointed CEO.

“Andrew outlasted a field of very high quality candidates for the Chief Executive position” said Commission Chairman elect, Chris Burrell.

“Andrew demonstrated throughout the interview process that he has the necessary experience and leadership qualities to guide all our stakeholders through the merger process and achieve our future strategic goals."

“In his role as Chief Executive, Andrew will be the key driver in the continued unification of Basketball Geelong and the Supercats.  He will be responsible for the management of staff, improving revenue growth, community and local business engagement, venue strategy and planning, grass roots development, and improving our relationships with our key stakeholders throughout the Geelong region” Mr Burrell said.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of bringing the Supercats and Basketball Geelong together.  There is a great opportunity to create one of the best sporting organisations in regional Victoria” said Scotford.  “I am excited by the opportunities that lie ahead and I will be working very hard with the Commissioners and staff to achieve our goals."

The appointment of the Chief Executive is an integral phase in the unification of the Supercats and Basketball Geelong and the establishment of the new Basketball Geelong Commission model.

Through the new Commission and CEO structure, the two associations aim to:

  • provide an environment for players, coaches and officials to perform at their full potential;
  • establish appropriate pathways to allow players, coaches and officials to participate at a state, national and international level;
  • provide the highest possible standard of graded and non-graded (social) competitions in the region which will increase participation across all ages and sexes;
  • manage, promote and deliver the best community and school based grass roots programs available in the Geelong region;
  • provide the best development programs to officials, coaches and volunteers
