BASKETBALL GEELONG formalise changes to Constitution

Last night at the Basketball Geelong Annual General Meeting the members approved the new constitution which will allow full implementation of the new corporate and governance structure for Basketball Geelong and the Geelong Supercats.

The Constitution has now created a 7 person Commission which is broadly charged to foster, encourage and administer the development and playing of basketball in the Greater Geelong, Bellarine, Golden Plains and Surf Coast region and surrounding areas. The initial focus will include a revamp of the domestic competitions as the Geelong Basketball League and the full integration of the representative teams under the Geelong Supercats brand.

The Commission will commence with a strong mix of skills representing the previous Basketball Geelong and Geelong Supercats Boards headed by Chris Burrell as incoming Chair and includes Damian Armour, Steve Bentley, Matthew Cowling, Braith Cox, Craig Herbert and Ian Sweet. The Commission members’ bios are available on the Basketball Geelong website.

In-coming Chair Chris Burrell paid tribute to outgoing President of Basketball Geelong, Frank Morrissy for his work over the past 5 years guiding Basketball Geelong and working towards this change. “Frank has been a strong advocate for Basketball in Geelong and whilst he completes his role of President following last night’s AGM I look forward to his ongoing support as we continue to grow Basketball in this region” Burrell said.

“I need also to pay tribute to Aaron Green and Matthew Cowling who have been members of the steering committee responsible for developing the model that we have had finalised last night. The Board of the Geelong Supercats and their Chair, Craig Herbert, have been fantastic as we worked together to achieve this outcome for Basketball in Geelong.”

“The Geelong Supercats are a team that have been very successful on the court and represent the Geelong region with great pride. This new structure will help build on that strong history as we both incorporate a junior representative structure underneath it to develop Supercats of the future as well as grow the supporter base”.
