GBL Winter Championship Wrap April 16th

YMCA has started its Geelong Basketball League Winter Championship campaign in fine style with an 86-49 hiding of Dolphins at Geelong Arena on Tuesday night.

Young Supercats Lewie Varley (24 points) and Riley Herbert (20) did most of the damage for Y, who put the game to bed by half-time with a 22-10 second quarter giving them an 18-point advantage at the main break.

Big V Supercat Ben McCawley was the only offensive threat for Dolphins, finishing the night with 26 points.

The experience of Sharks proved too much for Rovers to handle.

Dane Bow (18 points) was the best in an even team performance which resulted in a 72-44 victory.

Veteran Craig Jarvis (16 points) and Daniel Ferguson (12) provided plenty of support for Bow.

Simon Robertson was Rovers only player in double-figures, scoring 10 points.

Despite 32 points from Jackson Bentley, Christian College were defeated by a talented Vytis line-up.

The Knights held off the Eagles 83-74.

Try Boys had the better of Pivot City in a re-match of last year’s Winter Championship grand final.

The Bears, who were best served by 15 points from guard Chris Daniele, came away with a 60-52 victory.

In GBL women’s action, Sharks have claimed a nailbiting 47-46 win over Rovers to begin the new season.

Georgia Varley paced the Sharks’ scoring with 12 points, while fellow Young Lady Supercat Madi White and SEABL Lady Supercat Alex Duck both had 10.

Sarah Breed was Rovers’ best with 11 points, while Emily Koroneos had 10 points before fouling out.

A fast start by Dolphins proved the difference in its 60-43 win over an undermanned YMCA.

The twin towers of Lady Supercats youngster Tiarna Rolph (21 points) and Kim Martin (16) proved too much for Y to handle.

Veteran Vicki King did all she could to keep her team competitive, finishing with 14 points, while youngster Alana Hocking had 10.

A 29-point haul from Tash Daffy wasn’t enough to get Try Boys over the line in another tight finish against Pivot City.

The reigning GBL Winter Champions’ were able to sneak away with a 54-52 victory, with Fiona Johnson their leading scorer with 13 points.
