GBL Winter Championship Round Up - Round 9

Sharks have suffered their first loss of the Geelong Basketball League Winter Championship women’s season, after being handed an 84-59 hiding by fellow title contender Dolphins in round nine action on Tuesday night.

SEABL Lady Supercats captain Cortney Williamson continued her stellar first half of the season with 27 points, while Kim Martin (22 points) made the most of the absence of Sharks’ duo Maddy White and Jade Mitchell.

Alex Duck was again the star for Sharks, finishing with 19 points, while Georgia Varley contributed 17.

Lara and Try Boys played the second tie of the GBL women’s season, finishing locked at 58-all.

The Bears will be disappointed they couldn’t hang on for their first win of the season after leading by eight points at three-quarter time.

The Giants managed to grab a share of the points with a 15-7 final period, with American Abby Schrader proving hard to stop inside on her way to 24 points.

The consistent season of Big V Lady Supercats guard Tash Daffy continued with 22 points, while Katherine Brockett had 19 before fouling out.

Rovers had few problems in defeating Pivot City 62-44 to consolidate its spot inside the top four.

Ellie Stevens (19 points) and Emily Koroneos (15) provided an important one-two punch for Rovers.

Madi Boyd was best for Pivot with 15 points, while Ana Marinovic made a welcome return with 11.

Meanwhile YMCA has put a four point gap between the top three and Vytis in the GBL men’s competition following an 86-67 win over the Knights.

Y outscored Vytis in every quarter, with a 26-17 second period proving decisive.

Lewie Varley paced the winners with 21 points, while veteran Jordan Hill (18 points) and Kris Van Parreren (17) shot the ball well from outside.

Romas Liebich (15 points) and Steve Wiasak (13) kept the Knights competitive.

Christian College moved to within a point of the top four after coming from behind Try Boys at half time for a 75-53 victory.

The Eagles outscored the Bears 42-27 following the main break, with young guns Jackson Bentley (20 points) and Joel McFall (18) combining well.

Liam Meyrich paced Try Boys with 21 points.

Big V Supercats’ teammates Dane Bow and Anthony Kimble both scored 28 points, however it was Bow who had the last laugh as his Sharks downed Dolphins 85-58.

The game was in the balance until half time, however the ladder leaders blew the match open with a 27-13 third period.

Fellow guard James Deocampo provided the support for Bow with 18 points, while veteran big man Craig Jarvis had 14.

An undermanned Pivot City was made to work for its 47-40 win over Rovers.

Dusty Duggan dropped 17 points for the Pivotonians, while Josh Symons was best Rovers with 16.
