GBL Winter Championship Round Up - Round 17

YMCA and Pivot City all but confirmed a second semi-final meeting in the Geelong Basketball League Winter Championship playoffs after round 17 wins on Tuesday night at the Arena.

They are both five points clear of third placed Sharks with three rounds to play.

Y claimed win number 14 of the season with a 95-74 victory over Sharks, thanks to a 42-point haul from Lewie Varley.

The star guard proved impossible to contain, especially from the perimeter, knocking down five three-point attempts.

He was well supported by 16 points from brother Emerson and 14 from Riley Herbert.

Dane Bow kept Sharks competitive with 26 points, while veteran forward Craig Jarvis had 16.

Despite suiting up just five players, Pivot City made light work of Dolphins, winning 97-60.

Ash Cannan (32 points) was best in a solid all-round effort from the Pivotonians.

American Anthony Kimble again paced Dolphins, finishing with 31 points.

Christian College outscored Rovers in every quarter on its way to an 82-57 victory.

SEABL Supercats’ big man Liam McInerney proved hard to contain on the inside, scoring 23 points for Eagles.

Chris Eichler was best for Rovers with 22 points.

An impressive first half laid the foundation for Try Boys 91-65 victory over Vytis.

The Bears went on a scoring spree in the opening 20 minutes, leading 52-23 at the main break.

Youngster Liam Meyrich starred with 23 points, while Marty De Lange was again solid with 20.

Big man Lachie Headlam led the Knights with 17 points.

Rovers assured themselves a top two finish in the GBL women’s competition following a nailbiting 59-58 win over third-placed Lara.

The Giants held a six-point lead at three-quarter-time, however Rovers outscored them 17-10 in the final period to claim an important victory.

The undoubted evenness of Rovers’ roster was reflected on the scoresheet, with five players scoring in double figures, led by 12 points apiece from Ellie Stevens and Grace Parker.

Lara’s SEABL Lady Supercats duo Caitlin Shadbolt (28 points) and Abby Schrader (16) did all they could to get the Giants over the line.

Pivot City moved to within two points of the top four following a 74-40 hammering of a Dolphins team missing injured star Cortney Williamson.

Bianca Cheever was the star for Pivot with 32 points, while Olivia Cameron contributed 13.

Tiarna Rolph was best for Dolphins, who are now in danger of missing the finals, with 13 points.

Top of the table Sharks were made to work for their 64-61 win over YMCA.

The championship favourites trailed by nine points at half-time, but turned the contest in their favour with an 18-4 third quarter.

Alex Duck was again impressive with 22 points for Sharks, while Big V Lady Supercat Kathy Mallon had 22 for Y.
