GBL Winter Championship Round Up - Grand Finals

A JAMIE MEDVED-inspired Pivot City has claimed its fourth consecutive Geelong Basketball League Winter Championship men’s division one title, beating old foe YMCA 85-66 in the Tuesday night’s grand final at the Arena.

Medved, who was playing his last match for the Pivotonians, scored 16 points in the opening period on his way to 34 for the contest.

The SEABL Supercat shot the ball at impressive 59 per cent from the field, including making six-of-10 from outside the arc.

YMCA, which finished minor premier and defeated Pivot City in the second semi-final, held a 26-24 lead after a free-flowing first period, however the Pivotonians were able to turn the clamps defensively on Y’s potent offence.

They held YMCA to just 10 points in the second quarter, while scoring 18 of their own to take a six-point advantage into the main break.

Y was able to close the gap to one point early in the third period, but from then on it Pivot City which stamped its imprimatur on the match.

Medved, who was more subdued in the second quarter, again found his range, while Jason Reardon (22 points & 18 rebounds) also showcased his wide-ranging talents, finishing both under the basket and from outside.

The Pivotonians outscored Y 34-16 to finish the contest and claim the pennant.

YMCA was best served by 21 points from Lewie Varley, while Chris Brown had 12 before becoming one of three men in red to foul out of the contest.

A STUNNING line from star guard Alex Duck has propelled Sharks to its maiden women’s division one title.

Duck, who joined the club after arriving in Geelong to play SEABL, had 29 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and six steals in the 68-53 win over Rovers.

Sharks, which lost the second semi-final to Rovers, were slow in starting the contest, conceding the first four points of the match.

However, inspired by Duck and Rebecca Lane (17 points, seven rebounds and four assists), went on a 16-0 run that set the tone for the contest.

Rovers were able to get the match back on an even-footing during the second and third periods, mostly thanks to Lana Ryder (16 points and 10 rebounds) and Kylie Morrissy (14 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists).

However Sharks were able to put Rovers at arms-length towards the end of the penultimate quarter, before sealing a historic victory with 20-12 final term.
