RIP Ron Dawson

BASKETBALL in Geelong has lost one its most influential figures with the passing of Ron Dawson.

Ron lost his battle with brain cancer on Friday.

He began his journey in the sport with the YMCA club, before going on to be heavily involved in the Geelong Amatuer Basketball Association.

That led to Ron becoming president of the Basketball Victoria Country Council between 1973 and 1978, winning the second Jack Terrrill Medal for his contribution to BVCC in 1974.

Once his term as BVCC president concluded he became heavily involved in GABA's entry of a men's team into Melbourne competition in the late 1970s.

Ron, and many other hard working individuals, would ultimately be rewarded with the then Geelong Cats winning the South East Conference titile in 1981 and subsequent entry into the NBL in 1982.

The esteem in which Ron was held is reflected in life memberships of Basketball Geelong, the Geelong Supercats, Geelong YMCA Basketball Club and Basketball Victoria Country Council.

We will post details on Ron's funeral when they come to hand.
