GBL Winter Championship Division 1 Wrap- Finals Week 2

Basketball Geelong

YMCA will meet Pivot City in the Geelong Basketball Winter Championship Division 1 Grand Final after upsetting Christian College in the preliminary final on Tuesday night.

Y went into the clash having lost two of three meetings with the Eagles in 2014, including a 76-66 loss in the final round of the season just a fortnight ago.

However, they were able to get an early jump holding Christian College to just eight points, while scoring 14 of their own.

The Eagles were able to get going offensively in the second quarter, outscoring YMCA 21-18 to cut the margin to four by the main break.

However, a 14-5 third quarter proved the difference, as Y pushed their lead out to a match-winning 13 points.

The Varley brothers were influential in the win. Emerson finished with 20 points and Lewis 17.

Both connected on three three-point attempts, as YMCA made a team total of 12 triples.

Big men Liam McInerney (17 points) and Seb Loader (12) were best for Christian College, but star shooter Jackson Bentley was restricted to just nine points.

Dolphins hopes of winning a maiden women’s Division 1 Winter Championship remain alive following a 73-56 win over Pivot City.

After an even first quarter, Dolphins were able to put Pivot at arm’s length with a 23-13 second period, giving them a 37-27 advantage at half time.

Pivot City outscored Dolphins 16-15 in the third period. However, any hopes of a final quarter run were quickly snuffed out.

SEABL Lady Supercats captain Cortney Williamson again proved to be the difference.

She scored a game-high 26 points, which included six makes from beyond the arc.

Williamson was well supported by tall timber Kim Martin (15 points) and Ebony Rolph (10).

Guard Olivia Cameron poured in 16 points for Pivot, while Bianca Cheever, Shayna Poto and Lauren Moloney finished with nine points.
