Division 1 Men's and Women's Finals Review

Christian College takes out Basketball Geelong Div 1 title

Christian College has capped its emergence as a power to be reckoned with, winning the Basketball Geelong Division One men's summer championship.

The star-studded Eagles took their first Division One title with a 56-41 win over perennial title challenger YMCA in the grand final at The Arena on Tuesday night.

The win also put the seal on a perfect season for Christian College after going 15-0 through the regular season before sweeping through the playoffs with two more impressive wins.

Led by Supercat Nick Owusu (21 points) and Big V guard Keith Harrison (11 points), Christian College fought hard to gain the lead and finished off the grand final in convincing fashion.

YMCA was served well by up-and-coming Supercat Kris Van Parreren (13 points) and Tristan Johnson (11 points), but it could not sustain the intensity needed to keep up with the dominating Christian College team.

Although YMCA was up by four points at half time (22-26), the real break in the game for Christian College came during the third quarter with an inspirational drive by Nick Owusu that resulted in and a six-point turnaround.

Former Australian junior Leon O'Neil followed with a beautiful three-pointer to extend the lead and Christian College never looked back as Brett Seljak (10 points) helped steer the team to the title.

Try Boys win Division 1 title

Try Boys used a strong first half to build the foundation of its win in the BG Division One women's summer grand final.

After that good first half, Try Boys went on to beat Rovers, 41-31, at The Arena on Tuesday night behind an inspiring all-round performance by Anisa Sijersic (15 points).

Geelong Lady Cats captain Ash Salter (11 points) played a major hand for Try Boys, while Natasha Daffy added some important defensive intensity to help hold off Rovers' second-half resurgence.

Rovers were well-served by Lana Ryder-Kowalski (11 points) and fellow Lady Cat Prue Kenny (nine points) but it was not enough as they had to play catch-up basketball after being down 26-11 at half time.
