Lady Cats impress at home

The Basketball Geelong Lady Cats have had their first win of the Big V Championship season in front of a big home crowd.

The Lady Cats (1-1) led the whole game, outscoring the Bulleen Boomers in every quarter, turning an 18-point halftime lead into an 84-60 win at The Arena on Saturday night

Forward Candice Rogers played an outstanding game (23 points, 13 rebounds) and was well supported by Charmaine Ferguson (15 points, six rebounds), Prue Kenny (14 points, seven rebounds) and Sarah De Grandi (10 points, 10 rebounds).

It was an excellent performance by the Lady Cats after the disappointment of losing a close season-opener to Eltham Wildcats, so they will be looking for back-to-back wins when they play Waverley this Saturday at The Arena (8pm).

After a 97-79 loss for the Geelong Youth League men against Keilor on Saturday, they bounced back for their first win on a double-header weekend, defeating Hume City, 90-75, at home on Sunday.

After a steady first quarter, Geelong struggled to contain Keilor and was down at half time by nine points and the Cats could not make up ground despite the efforts of Shane Hunter (16 points), Brett Seljac (14 points, 16 rebounds) and James Swallow (14 points).

It was a different scenario on Sunday at The Arena as the Cats came out hard to lead by 19 points at half time.

Simon Evans was impressive with 18 points (four three-pointers) while Seljac (15 points, 17 rebounds) stood tall once again and Hunter (14 points, nine rebounds) proved his worth.

Geelong (1-2) plays Waverley on Saturday at The Arena (6pm) as the opener to the double-header with the Lady Cats.

The Geelong Division One men came unstuck at the hands of Bulleen on Saturday night, going down by 18 points at The Arena.

After an even first term and being down by only six points at half time, the Cats (1-1) were unable to capitalise offensively, shooting at only 25 per cent in the final period to lose, 99-81.

Seb Loader was strong on the boards with 13 rebounds while three players - Paul Hutchison, Keith Harrison and Ben Suchanek high-scored with 15 points.

Geelong will look to come back hard with a road game against Hawthorn on Saturday night.
