Lady Cats basketballer Candice Rogers is on fire

GEELONG Lady Cats basketball star Candice Rogers wants to be a firefighter.

And her bid to follow in her fireman father's footsteps is reaping benefits on the basketball court.

Rogers, 23, has been named Big V player of the week following an outstanding game in the Lady Cats' win over Bulleen Boomers at the Arena last Saturday.

Rogers, the Lady Cats MVP for the past two seasons, has trimmed 15kg from her body after stepping up her fitness program.

She has passed two fitness trials - a shuttle run and an obstacle course - and needs to pass only one more to become eligible to join the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Melbourne.

Her father Gary Rogers lives in Geelong but works with the brigade.

"I have grown up watching Dad in the profession. There's not a lot of females in it, but it is something I have wanted to do since I was four," she said.

If Rogers is not selected, she has a Plan B in place.

She is in her fourth year of teacher studies at Deakin University.

"I've put a fair bit into my studies, I love the kids so if I don't get into the fire brigade I've got something else that I love to fall back on," she said.

Rogers was troubled with a foot injury last season and could only train at half pace.

"I couldn't go to the gym and I couldn't do extra stuff to get myself fit. The injury fixed itself and I've done a big pre-season, I wanted to get back and make an impact," the forward said.

Rogers top scored against Bulleen with 23 points, shooting 47 per cent from the field and 83 per cent from the line. She also had 13 rebounds. She is tipping the Lady Cats will have a big season with one win and one loss in two rounds.

"This year we have a fantastic bunch of girls, you can tell off-court as well as on-court that they really get along well," Rogers said.

"Our new head coach Darren Busuttil has brought a whole new perspective and enthusiasm to the group."
