Division One Men & Women Game Reviews - Round Two

Rovers guard Prue Kenny has gone within an ace of hitting the magical 50.

The livewire Lady Cat landed 47 points in a brilliant performance for Rovers in the Basketball Geelong Division One women’s championship at The Arena on Tuesday night.

Starting with a 10-point opening period, Kenny had 19 by halftime and added 28 points in the second half as Rovers (1-1) beat club-mates Rovers Hawks, 88-54.

While Kenny dominated the scoring with a total that included just one three-pointer and two free-throws, Tania Du Plessis and Lana Ryder-Kowalski each added 15 points in support.

The young Rovers Hawks (1-1) were led by Ellie Stevens, who was last week selected in the Country Victoria Under-18 team, with 17 points, while Sarah Breed added 12.

Try Boys again showed why it will be a championship favourite with a strong 59-36 win over Pivot City.

Using a significant height and size advantage, Try Boys turned a 33-26 halftime edge into a 23-point victory as they held Pivot City to just 10 points in the second half.

Forward Anisa Sijersic (20 points) and guard Katherine Brockett (16 points) led the way for Try Boys (2-0) while Kelsey Browne (10 points) topped the scoring for Pivot (0-2).

YMCA had to work hard to get over the top of Sharks, 78-57.

After leading 48-42 at three-quarter time, YMCA (2-0) used a 30-15 final period to overrun Sharks (0-2) as guards Jae Conn (25 points) and Madison Koehler (25 points) led the charge. Mellissa Schwarz (18 points) was best for Sharks.

PIVOT City outlasted a spirited comeback by a young Try Boys outfit to win its BG Division One men’s championship showdown, 52-50.

Try Boys (0-2) outscored Pivot 11-6 in the fourth quarter, but could not get all the way back despite 15 points from Robert Harding and 12 from Chris Daniele.

Pivot City (2-0) kept its unbeaten start intact with a spread team effort that included 10 points apiece from Wes Pickett and Adam Clapinski and nine points from James Kingsbury.

YMCA got the better of club-mates YMCA Cougars, 46-36, in a game that was always up for grabs.

After trailing 10-7 after the first quarter, YMCA (2-0) got going with a 15-8 second period that proved the difference as Tristan Johnson (14 points) and Jared Powell (13 points) led the way.

Big man Peter Van Den Burg (11 points) was top scorer for YMCA Cougars (0-2) as they looked to break their championship season duck.

Try Boys Bears (2-0) flexed their muscle with a 73-37 win over Dolphins (0-2) as Marty De Lange poured in 25 points, while Rovers (1-1) got their first win, 89-55, over Sharks Runners (0-2) as Andrew Murphy hit 22 points.
