Geelong Big V Game Reviews - Round Four

BASKETBALL GEELONG BIG V REPORT – Round 4

THE Geelong Lady Cats found out over the weekend just how small the margin between winning and losing in the Big V Championship can be.

After losing to the Melbourne Tigers by four points at home on Saturday night, the Lady Cats backed up for an excellent two-point road win over the Sandringham Sabres on Sunday.

The 51-47 loss to the Tigers was one that got away from Geelong as Melbourne scored nine second-chance points in the game-breaking fourth quarter.

But with the lessons learned and determination added, Geelong (2-3) got over Sandringham, 56-54, on a last-second basket by forward Candice Rogers.

After being limited by foul trouble against the Tigers, Rogers (15 points, 17 rebounds, seven assists) went close to a triple-double as she played a big game against Sandringham.

Guard Prue Kenny (16 points, seven rebounds) was excellent for the Lady Cats, while forward Ana Marinovic (eight points, six rebounds) offered good inside support.

The Lady Cats have another tough assignment on Saturday night at home (tip-off 5.30pm) to the Hume City Broncos (3-2).

The Geelong Cats got an MVP performance from forward Chris Brown (22 points, 20 rebounds) as he led the way in a 106-81win at The Arena on Sunday.

That 25-point win has put Geelong (3-1) right in the thick of the Big V Division One men playoff picture and showed the strength and depth of coach Lanard Copeland’s roster.

While Brown cleaned up inside, the guards were also a big factor as Paul Hutchison (21 points), Keith Harrison (15 points) and Ben Suchanek (15 points, 10 rebounds) piled up the scoring.

After leading 52-38 at half-time, Geelong did not let up in the third and fourth quarters with a performance that might have been the team’s best of the season.

It will be important to carry that form into a testing road-home double this weekend against Whittlesea (1-3) on Saturday and Coburg (4-1) at 3pm on Sunday at The Arena.

The Geelong Big V Youth League (2) men’s team got back on track with a 110-97 road win over Chelsea on Saturday night.

Five Geelong players scored in double figures, led by Nathan Pigott (23 points, 8-11 FG), Simon Evans (16 points) and Shane Hunter (16 points, 11 rebounds).

After leading by four at the half, Geelong (2-3) used a 26-19 third quarter to assume control of the game and go into the weekend’s road-home double against Whittlesea and Coburg (1pm Sunday at The Arena) with confidence.
