Division One Men & Women Game Reviews - Round 3

SHARKS have signalled their intent on being a team to be reckoned with in the Basketball Geelong Division One Men’s Championship.

Facing a rebuilt Pivot City line-up, Sharks outscored the opposition 13-7 in the fourth quarter to take out a close game, 50-42.

Sharks were too strong in the second half, with 10 points each from Michael Parsons and James Decampo sealing the game on Tuesday night at The Arena.

Despite the efforts of Supercats big man Daniel George (11 points), Pivot was unable to avoid its first loss for the season.

Christian College Eagles were once again too strong for their opponents, maintaining an unbeaten start to the season by thrashing the young Try Boys team by 40 points, 71-31.

Up-and-coming youngster Marcus Larcombe led the experienced Eagles with 17 points, while Geelong Big V pair Sebastian Loader and Keith Harrison also dominated with 16 points each.

Rob Harding was best for Try Boys with eight points.

YMCA out-lasted a second half fight-back by Vytis, to maintain its unbeaten record.

Vytis outscored YMCA 32-23 in the second half, but could not get all the way back despite 19 points from Big V Youth League player Steven Wiasak and 11 from Andrew Suchanek.

Rodney O’Brien led the way with 16 points for YMCA, with Tristan Johnson adding a handy 12.

Dolphins got their first win in a tight game, 60-57, over Sharks Runners (0-2) as youngster Ben Gray was a stand-out with 22 points, while Try Boys Bears managed only an eight-point win over bottom of the ladder YMCA Cougars, 71-63.

 

 

LADY Cats recruit Jae Conn has shown her firepower with a big game for YMCA in the Basketball Geelong Division One Women’s Championship.

Conn shot a game high 24 points to lead YMCA to a five-point victory over the experienced Rovers team, xx-xx, at The Arena on Tuesday night.

Conn teamed up with fellow Lady Cats Vicki Mallon (eight points) and Charmaine Ferguson (six points) as unbeaten YMCA fought out a tough second half, despite valuable efforts from Rovers’ Prue Kenny (13 points) and Bree Cail (18 points), who played Big V for Bendigo.

Pivot City was commanding in its 30-point win over Sharks, 79-49.

Mel Aherne (22 points) and Kelsey Browne (20 points) led the way for Pivot as it notched up its first win for the season. Melissa Schwarz was best for Sharks with 12 points.

Try Boys remained undefeated, despite a last-term charge by Rovers Hawks, with a 52-34 win. 

Chantelle Brockett, who was last week selected in the Country Victoria Under-18 team, high-scored for Try Boys with 18 points while Sarah De Grandi (12 points) showed great support with Tash Daffy (11 points).

The young Rovers Hawks were led by Lady Cats rookies Jess Watson and Ellie Stevens, who each added eight points.
