Geelong Big V Game Reviews - Round Six

IT wasn’t pretty, but it was effective, and that’s all the Geelong Lady Cats were worried about.

Badly needing a win to reignite their Big V Championship season, the Lady Cats turned on a good second half to beat Bulleen, 85-70, on Saturday night.

The 15-point road win was just the boost to confidence and form the Lady Cats (3-4) needed after a couple of disappointing losses.

After trailing 47-43 at half-time, the Lady Cats used a 23-11 third period to take control of the game, closing it out with a solid 19-12 final quarter.

Charmaine Ferguson (22 points, 10-15 FG, nine rebounds) was excellent for the Lady Cats, while lively scoring guard Prue Kenny (19 points) showed good touch.

Another good performance came from centre Candice Rogers (14 points, 18 rebounds) as she helped the Lady Cats to a 48-33 rebounding edge, while Sarah Liebelt (nine points, eight assists) was solid.

The Lady Cats, who are just two wins out of the top four, face a crucial road-home double this weekend against the Waverley Falcons (6-1) on Saturday and the Dandenong Rangers (5-3) at The Arena on Sunday (2pm).

Basketball Geelong’s men’s team found out just how tough it can be at the sharp end of the Big V Division One ladder with a 127-101 home loss to Sherbrooke Suns on Sunday.

Top-of-the ladder Sherbrooke (7-1) jumped Geelong with a 29-14 first quarter and never trailed, despite a couple of comeback attempts by the home team.

Frustrated by some of the referees’ decisions, Geelong did not have the composure or the size and strength to compete with Sherbrooke, especially when centre Seb Loader(eight points, five rebounds) left the game in the second half.

Guard Keith Harrison (19 points) and forward Chris Brown (19 points, 15 rebounds, five assists) led the Geelong scoring while Paul Hutchison added 14 points.

Still sitting third on the ladder, Geelong (5-2) faces an arduous road trip to play Mildura (3-5) on Saturday, but will be disappointed if it does not get the win.

Geelong’s Big V Youth League (2) team also suffered a loss to Sherbrooke, 108-70, at The Arena on Sunday.

Sherbrooke (6-2) led 50-34 at half-time and was never in trouble against Geelong, which had Nathan Pigott (19 points) and Brett Seljak (18 points, 18 rebounds) as the only scorers in double digits.

Geelong (4-4) now faces a crucial road game against Hume City (5-3) on Saturday night.
