Geelong Big V Game Reviews - Round 8

GEELONG has jumped to second place on the Big V Division One men’s ladder, underlining its candidacy as a championship challenger.

Faced with a difficult road-home double, Geelong went 2-0 for the weekend with a pair of mature and impressive performances in the wins over Coburg and Sunbury.

Expecting fireworks in the return with Coburg after a testy encounter at The Arena a few weeks ago, Geelong stayed focused for an excellent 93-81 road win on Saturday night.

But the big test of backing up against playoff-bound Sunbury at home on Sunday was one Geelong faced and passed well with a 103-89 victory.

Although beaten on the boards, Geelong played good defence and shot the ball well as guards Paul Hutchison (30 points, 7-12 3pt FG) and Keith Harrison (25 points, six assists) led the way.

Big man Seb Loader (15 points, nine rebounds) was solid, despite playing with foul trouble, while forward Chris Brown played well in the important back-to-back wins.

Now building momentum, Geelong (8-2) will be going for four straight wins when it plays Hawthorn (5-5) at The Arena on Sunday (3pm).

Geelong jumped back into Big V Youth League (2) playoff contention by emulating its senior team with road-home wins over Coburg and Sunbury.

Badly needing a 2-0 weekend, Geelong delivered with a 91-76 road win over Coburg on Saturday followed by a 90-77 win over Sunbury at home on Sunday.

After hitting 29 points against Coburg, Nathan Piggot had a team-high 18 points against Sunbury, getting good support from Shane Hunter (16 points) and Brett Seljak (15 points, 15 rebounds).

Geelong (6-5) will need to continue its good form with a road-home double against Waverley (7-3) on Saturday and Latrobe City (7-3) on Sunday (The Arena, 1pm).

The Geelong Lady Cats’ Big V Championship playoff hopes took a hit when they were humbled 76-32 by Hume City at Broadmeadows on Sunday.

Featuring several WNBL players, Hume City led 48-8 at half-time, leaving the Lady Cats to play for pride and their reputations as Charmaine Ferguson top-scored for Geelong with seven points.

The Lady Cats (4-6) face a tough home game against Melbourne Tigers (6-5) this Saturday (5.30pm at The Arena) as the front end of a doubleheader with the Supercats.
