Christian College Eagles dominate BG Division One

THE jockeying for places in the Basketball Geelong Division One men’s championship playoffs is warming up with at least five teams trying to claim two spots.

Even with 13 weeks left, it looks like Christian College Eagles (6-1) and Try Boys Bears (7-1) will make the top four, but after that it’s a raffle.

Only two wins split YMCA and Pivot City, who are tied for third, and YMCA Cougars, who are seventh and looking to make some inroads in coming weeks.

The playoff picture was helped little by Tuesday night’s results at The Arena, although Christian College emerged as title favourite with a 97-60 win over Try Boys Bears.

The showdown between first and second turned into a non-event as Brett Seljak (24 points) and Marcus Larcombe (21 points) led the way for the Eagles.

Veteran guard Paul Hutchison (18 points) was the high man for the Bears.

Sixth-placed Vytis scored an important win over YMCA Cougars, 75-68, to keep up its pursuit of a finals spot.

Kristian Bucovac (27 points) and Romy Liebich (25 points) led Vytis (4-3) while Chad Rivett (24 points) played a big hand for YMCA Cougars (3-4).

Pivot City (5-2) got a spead effort on offence, led by Wes Picket (17 points) in a 62-47 win over Sharks Runners (0-7).

Sharks Runners got 19 points from youngster Emerson Varley.

Fifth-placed Sharks (4-3) did a number on Rovers, winning 101-48 as Dane Bow (36 points) led five scorers in double-digits. Andrew Murphy had 20 points for Rovers (2-5).

YMCA escaped a close call to maintain its unbeaten record in the BG Division One women’s championship.

Trailing for most of the game, YMCA finally overhauled the resilient Rovers to win, 49-46, at The Arena on Tuesday night.

It was a stern test for YMCA (7-0-1) as it got a big contribution from recruit Candice Rogers (23 points) with support from Charmaine Ferguson (15 points).

Third-placed Rovers (5-3) will rue the game as one that got away after Kylie Morrissy (15 points) and Sherrie Noonan (13 points) put them in position to win.

Fourth-placed Pivot City cruised to an easy win over bottom-of-the-ladder Sharks.

Using an excellent first quarter as its springboard, Pivot City (3-4-1) won 79-36 as Kelsey Browne (22 points) found range from the perimeter and Olivia Cameron (19 points) turned defence into offence.

Sharks (0-8) got 10 points apiece from Meghan Kelly and Rachel Alldis.
