Geelong Big V Lady Cats fall short

With just eight games left in the Big V Championship season, the Geelong Lady Cats’ playoff hopes are resting on a precipice.

Sitting sixth on the ladder, the Lady Cats (4-9) have to get on a winning streak if they are to make a run at the playoffs.

The Lady Cats’ cause was not helped by Sunday’s 64-62 loss to Eltham Wildcats at The Arena, falling short with a big comeback.

Trailing 42-17 at the half, the Lady Cats used a 25-5 third period to get back into the game, but could not complete their charging comeback.

Forward Candice Rogers (20 points, seven rebounds) and guard Charmaine Ferguson (18 points, seven rebounds) led the Lady Cats, while Prue Kenny added 12 points.

Geelong’s Big V Division One men continued their excellent form and made it five straight wins with a 99-89 win over the Altona Gators at The Arena on Saturday night.

Centre Seb Loader (26 points, 19 rebounds) played a huge game for Geelong (10-2) as it maintained its strong grip on second place on the ladder.

Using a 54-43 second half to close out the win, Geelong also got big efforts from forward Chris Brown (18 points, 14 rebounds) and guard Paul Hutchison (18 points).

Geelong’s Big V Youth League (2) men kept their playoff hopes alive with two wins from their weekend road-home double.

Seventh-placed Geelong (8-7) pulled out a hard-fought 86-80 road win over Werribee on Saturday night, then backed up for a thrilling 111-99 overtime victory over Whittlesea on Sunday.

Centre Brett Seljak (20 points, 20 rebounds) was excellent against Werribee, but the star of the weekend was Captain, Steven Wiasak with games of 20 points, 17 rebounds and 33 points, 24 rebounds.

All Big V teams are off this weekend for the Queen’s Birthday Weekend.
