Lady Cats struggle to get a win

It was a case of unlucky seven for the Geelong Lady Cats.

Trying to keep their Big V Championship finals hopes alive, the Lady Cats unfortunately dropped both games of a weekend double to make it seven straight losses.

In what has become a familiar story, the Lady Cats put in a great effort on the road against second-placed Waverley Falcons on Saturday night only to come up just short.

After Waverley took control by outscoring Geelong 41-26 in the middle two periods, the Lady Cats made a fourth-quarter charge, finally losing 78-71.

Guard Prue Kenny (20 points) and forward Candice Rogers (13 points) led the Lady Cats, who had to back-up at home on Sunday against third-placed Dandenong Rangers.

After keeping the game relatively close, the Lady Cats lost touch during a third-quarter scoring drought and lost 71-55 at The Arena.

Kenny (11 points) was against the leading scorer for the Lady Cats while Rogers (10 points) and Charmaine Ferguson (10 points) made contributions.

The seventh-placed Lady Cats (4-12) are on the road to the Melbourne Tigers (9-6) on Sunday.

Geelong’s Division One men made it seven straight wins, taking care of Mildura, 118-90, at The Arena on Saturday night.

Veteran guard Paul Hutchison (22 points) again led the way for Geelong, while backcourt partner Keith Harrison (14 points, six assists) and forward Marty De Lange (16 points) played key roles.

Indeed, Geelong had six players score in double digits as it took control of the game with an impressive 63-38 first half while shooting at better than 50 per cent.

Second-placed Geelong’s first half was indicative of what this team is capable of and will need to reproduce consistently to be a serious championship contender.

Geelong (12-2) can continue its strong winning run this weekend with a road-home double against Bulleen (6-8) on Saturday and Whittlesea (3-10) at The Arena (2pm) on Sunday.

Geelong’s Youth League (2) men’s team remains on the playoff bubble after a 97-82 loss to Keilor at The Arena on Saturday night.

Captain Steven Wiasak (21 points, 20 rebounds) played another big game for Geelong, which led by three at half-time only to be out-scored 58-40 the rest of the way.

Sitting seventh on the ladder, Geelong (8-9) faces a tough road game against Sherbrooke (12-4) on Saturday night.
