BG Division One gearing up for finals

BARRING any massive upsets, the top four teams are set for the Basketball Geelong Division One men’s championship playoffs.

YMCA and Christian College Eagles have to the top two places and the double-chance, while Try Boys Bears are safe and secure in third spot in the standings.

Pivot City will clinch fourth place unless Dolphins pull the upset in next Tuesday night’s regular-season finale and Sharks win to overtake Pivot.

That seems an unlikely scenario, but one that should not be ruled out until the games are played and the playoff spots are given the official tick.

But for all intents and purposes, that’s how the semi-finals will play out after YMCA beat Try Boys Bears in another top-quality game at The Arena on Tuesday night.

The 78-62 win clinched first place for YMCA as Jordan Hill (18 points) and Rod O’Brien (14 points) continued their excellent form, while Marty De Lange (13 points) was the Bears’ high scorer.

Christian College did what it had to with a comprehensive 101-30 win over Sharks Runners as Chris Dunlop (24 points) and Marcus Larcombe (21 points) led the way.

Pivot City stayed a step ahead of the chasing Sharks with 72-40 win over Rovers as Pivot pair Nick Kent (17 points) and Daniel George (17 points) offset the effort of Lucas Kenny (18 points).

Sharks certainly showed they are not taking the foot off the pedal by handing out a 139-62 demolition of Dolphins as Daniel Weaver (42 points) went off.

In the final game, Try Boys beat YMCA Cougars, 65-35.

The finals slots are also set in the BG Division One women’s championship with YMCA secure in first place and Try Boys in second followed by Pivot City and Rovers.

Try Boys made sure of finishing with the double-chance by belting Sharks 66-16 as forward Katherine Brockett (20 points) and guard Ash Salter (18 points) led the way.

YMCA continued its domination of the competition with a 55-29 win over Rovers Hawks as Charmaine Ferguson (20 points) paced Y. Alex Thompson (10 points) led Rovers Hawks.
