Eagles lead Division One men's medal race

Christian College Eagles are now the team to beat for the Basketball Geelong Division One men’s championship.

Always considered a strong title threat, Christian College took its game up a notch with a 91-75 win over YMCA in the major semi-final on Tuesday night at The Arena.

That 16-point win to advance to the grand final was an ominous statement by Christian College that anything less than a championship will be unacceptable.

Guard Nick Owusu (28 points) was the game-high scorer as he led Christian College while forward Leon O’Neill (18 points) and guard JJ Paton (18 points) made big contributions.

Veteran Jordan Hill (19 points) and Jared Powell (14 points) were the top scorers for YMCA as it tried everything to get the better of Christian College.

Indeed, YMCA had four players foul out as it racked up a massive 29 fouls to 12 as it tried to peg back the deficit.

At least YMCA will get a second chance in next week’s preliminary final, where it will play the dangerous Try Boys Bears.

Facing an elimination game, Try Boys Bears topped Pivot City, 75-55, in the minor semi-final to move one win away from a grand final berth.

With Steve Hyland (23 points) and Paul Hutchison (15 points) leading the way, Try Boys Bears got the job done despite a big game from Pivot’s Daniel George (31 points).

YMCA remained on track for the BG Division One women’s championship.

After finishing top of the ladder, YMCA outlasted Try Boys, 65-58, in the major semi-final at The Arena on Tuesday night to advance to the grand final.

Candice Rogers (21 points) and Maddie Koehler (17 points) paced YMCA while Anisa Sijersic (21 points) and Katherine Brockett (18 points) kept Try Boys in the game.

Rovers came from behind to eliminate Pivot City from the playoffs with a 59-58 win in the minor semi-final.

Lana Ryder-Kowalski (27 points) and Jenny Male (17 points) were excellent for Rovers while Olivia Cameron (20 points) and Mel Aherne (14 points) took Pivot within a basket of victory.

Rovers will play Try Boys in the preliminary final next Tuesday.
